Preparing for Your Baptism

Baptism is a wonderful moment, and we are so glad you are taking this step. It is the picture God gives us of the gospel. Going down into the water is a picture of dying to your old life. Coming up out of the water is a picture of rising to new life in Christ. What happened in your heart when God saved you is now shown to the whole church in a way everyone can see.

To help us get ready for your baptism, we have a short form for you to fill out. It collects a few details we need, and it gives you the chance to put into words what God has done in you. Walking through it now takes the pressure off later, so you can simply enjoy the day.

What the Form Will Ask

The form gathers a few details from you. Here are the main ones to think about ahead of time.

• The name for your certificate. Let us know exactly how you would like your name to appear on your baptismal certificate, so we can have it ready for you as a keepsake.
• Your t-shirt size. We provide a shirt for you to wear when you are baptized, so we just need your size.
• Your testimony. This is the part that takes a little forethought, so we have given you more on it below.
• How you would like to share. You can choose to share your testimony yourself, or to have it read for you. More on that below as well.

There are a couple of other quick questions on the form too, but none of them take long. The form itself will walk you through everything.

Writing Your Testimony

A testimony is simply the story of God's grace in your life, told in your own words. Do not worry about making it sound polished or impressive. We are not looking for a perfect speech. We are looking for an honest account of how God brought you to Himself. The Lord is the hero of every testimony, and He has been at work in your life. This is your chance to tell that story.

As you write, it helps to think about your testimony in three parts. Walking through these one at a time makes the whole thing much easier to write, and it helps others follow your story clearly.

1. Your life before Christ. What was your life like before you knew Jesus? Describe where you were, what you were living for, and what was true of your heart before you came to faith.

2. Your conversion. Tell us when you became a Christian and how you became a Christian. What did God use to draw you to Himself? How did you come to put your trust in Jesus?

3. What Jesus has done in your life since you put your trust in Him. How has your life changed since you came to faith? Describe what the Lord has been doing in you and how He continues to work in your life today.

You do not need to write a lot for each part. A few honest sentences for each one is plenty. Together, these three parts tell the story of how God found you and made you His own.

Choosing How to Share

On the form you will choose how you would like your testimony shared during the service. You have two options, and both are completely fine.

The first option is to share your testimony yourself, out loud, during the service. The second option is to have someone read a shorter, prepared version of it for you. If the thought of speaking in front of the congregation makes you nervous, please do not let that worry you. Many people choose to have their testimony read, and it is just as meaningful. Either way, your story will be a gift to the church, and we will rejoice with you as you follow the Lord in baptism.
