The Gospel at the Center

The triangle has three sides. It also has a center.

At the center of the mission is the gospel.

Remove the gospel and you may still have social work. You may have moral teaching. You may have cultural engagement. But you no longer have Christian missions. The gospel is the message we carry. It is the reason we go, the content of what we teach, and the reality into which baptism initiates the new believer. Everything in the Great Commission depends on the gospel and serves the gospel.

Paul defines the gospel in 1 Corinthians 15.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

The gospel is not advice. It is not a self-help program. It is not a call to try harder or be better. It is an announcement of what God has done in Christ. Christ died. Christ was buried. Christ was raised. Fact, not feeling. History, not aspiration. And it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

The gospel addresses the most fundamental problem in the universe. Human sin and the wrath of God against it.

Every human being has sinned and falls short of the glory of God. The wages of sin is death. God, who is perfectly holy and perfectly just, cannot overlook sin. He will not sweep it under the rug of the universe. Sin must be paid for.

And this is where the gospel becomes the best news in the world.

God Himself provided the payment.

"God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). On the cross, Jesus bore the wrath of God that we deserved. He took our sin upon Himself and gave us His righteousness. Paul calls this the great exchange: "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21).

This is the doctrine of justification. God declares the sinner righteous, not because the sinner has earned it, but because Christ has earned it for him. Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

The resurrection proves the payment was accepted. "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins" (1 Corinthians 15:17). But Christ has been raised. Death could not hold Him. The grave could not keep Him. He is alive, and because He lives, everyone who trusts in Him will live also.

This is the message we carry to the nations. Not moral improvement. Not religious ritual. Not Western culture. Not political ideology. We carry the announcement that God has acted in history to save sinners through the death and resurrection of His Son, and that everyone who repents and believes will be forgiven.

There is no other message that can save. "There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

The urgency of missions rests on the exclusivity of the gospel. If there were many paths to God, missions would be unnecessary. There is one path. Christ. And billions of people have never heard His name.
