Closing

You have read the devil's mail for six weeks. You have watched a senior tempter coach a younger one through pride, appetite, self-deception, distraction, and the long slow drift of an ordinary life. If the book has done its work, you have seen your own heart in it more than once.

Now take a step back and look at the whole.

Screwtape never wins by a single dramatic stroke. He works by inches: a redirected affection here, a comforting lie there, a feeling indulged but never obeyed, a small appetite allowed to rule. And the patient is kept, in the end, not by his own vigilance but by the grip of God, through the ordinary means God has given: the Word, prayer, the gathered church, the Lord's Supper, the daily killing of sin. The patient is saved at the last not because he was clever about the devil but because Christ held him.

That is the lesson to carry out of this study. Watchfulness matters. "Be sober-minded; be watchful" (1 Peter 5:8) is a command, and Screwtape shows you what you are watching for. But your security is not your watchfulness. It is the One who began a good work in you and will bring it to completion (Philippians 1:6).

A final reflection before you close the course:

Across all six lessons, name the single tactic of Screwtape that exposed your own heart most clearly. Then name the one ordinary means of grace, Word, prayer, the Lord's Supper, or the gathered church, that God is calling you to take up as your answer to it. Write both down. Tell one person. Begin this week.

The devil is real, and he is defeated. Stay near to Christ. Use the means he gave you. Keep fighting, and keep looking up.
