Why Behavior Change Is Not Enough

You can modify behavior without changing the heart. That is the central problem.

In Mark 7, Jesus locates the source of human corruption not in outside influences but in the heart itself. What comes out of a person defiles them. This means no amount of rule-following, self-discipline, or environmental change reaches the actual problem. Moral tinkering treats symptoms. The root stays intact.

We also cannot escape responsibility by pointing elsewhere. No one forces a person to dwell on bitterness, pursue what is forbidden, or seek satisfaction in what cannot satisfy. These are choices. We are not merely victims of a broken world. We are active participants in our own rebellion.

The gospel addresses this at the root level. Christ did not die for people who had cleaned themselves up. He died for the ungodly while they were still weak, still enemies. Yes, Christianity is a crutch. That is the point. Crippled people need one.

Justification does more than forgive. It gives new desires. The person with a changed heart can enjoy food, friendship, and beauty as gifts rather than gods. Spiritual discipline stops being a payment plan and becomes the natural pursuit of someone who is already loved.

The heart changes. Everything else follows.
